The nursing home. It hovers in our mind like a haunted mansion set against a backdrop of stormy clouds and circling bats.
We often think of our loved ones entering a nursing home as a last resort. But the reality is that a nursing home can offer your aging loved one a better quality of life. Here's why:
1. They feel safe
This is our number one reason why living in a nursing home could improve their quality of life; a sense of security.
A nursing home is responsible for the medical care of its residents. They'll make sure your loved one receives the correct does of medication at the right time (an issue that can be a struggle for seniors with memory impairments). They'll monitor their health, notice any change in their condition and treat them accordingly.
2. They have company
And the potential for an active social life. In a nursing home they can find friends with common interests, and enjoy spending time with others from their own generation.
3. They have constant help
At home, a senior who is struggling with their personal care will often neglect their hygiene, hide their troubles or decline help due to embarrassment.
A nursing home can offer a safe place for a senior to accept help with their bathing and personal care. The nursing home will also make sure their living area is kept clean and in good condition.
4. They have scheduled meal times
No more worries about a fire starting at the kitchen stove or expired food in the fridge. In a nursing home, the staff is responsible for making sure your loved one is eating well.
5. They have fun
They have the opportunity to enjoy new experiences. Nursing homes often provide regular social and recreational activities, such as games or live music for the residents.
